It’s that time of year again! School is about ready to start and there are a number of students who will begin the school year without the needed supplies to be successful in school. However, you can help us change that! The Upcountry Community Center and Camanche Lake Community Center are working together to supply these children in need. Head to your nearest community center or Wal-Mart to sponsor a child through our “BACKPACK-2-SCHOOL” project! A class on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will be held on Monday, September 15 6:30- 8:30PM at New Life Christian Church 87 Ridge Rd. Sutter Creek. Description of event meeting    Children who have been through a traumatic experience may be suffering from “Post Traumatic Stress Disorders”. Therefore, it is important for all of us to become educated regarding Post Traumatic Stress disorders and the unique problems these children and their families face. LOCAL AUTHOR EVENT – Wednesday, September 17; 6:30-7:30PM Catherine Burr will discuss her novels Silicon Secrets and Desires and Deceptions. Catherine moved to California from Canada as a child and she began publishing books of romance and intrigue after her children started college. Her next novel is titled the Rancher and the City Girl. This promises to be an evening filled with fun and may interest readers of mysteries.

SQUARE DANCING CLASSES STARTING UP. One of California’s Oldest and most fun dance clubs, the Jackson Claim Jumpers are announcing New-Dancer Classes starting in September. The Jackson Claim Jumpers Square Dance Club is for singles, couples, and families. It is a great way to have some enjoyable exercise and meet new people. Lodi Bowmen's Archery School is now enrolling students for October classes in Ione.  This course is designed for all ages, and enables both beginning and experienced archers to reach expert performance level.  All equipment is provided for the class conducted by certified instructors on four consecutive weekends, both Saturday & Sunday, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, beginning October 11th.  Classes are held at Lodi Bowmen's archery range, located on Buena Vista Road near north Lake Camanche.  The cost is $100 per individual, or $150 per family unit. SPANISH AND FRENCH classes offered by Elke Duffy: Beginning Spanish and Beginning French classes will not take place during the month of September but will be continued in October.
Beginning Spanish will be continued starting Saturday, October 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for 5 consecutive Saturdays up to and including November 1, 2008. Beginning French will start October 4th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the same time period. The cost for each 5 week session is $60 and includes the text book. Classes are being held in the Amador County Association of Realtors offices (upstairs) in Mother Lode Plaza (behind Jose's Restaurant). 1st Annual County-wide Adult Spelling Bee, Friday, October 3rd from  5PM to 9PM at the Sutter Creek Auditorium. $5 general admission. Words will be flying – complemented by plenty of team spirit and good libations in a combination of “pronouns, pizza and pinot (or pilsner for beer lovers).” Sponsored as a fundraiser for the Amador Community Foundation, the county-wide spelling bee brings an increasingly popular adult outing to Amador County. It’s the “ultimate TGIF” event available to teams representing (or sponsored by) local businesses. To be sure the focus is on fun, lists of words to be used during the competition will be available for teams to study prior to the event. The bee is limited to the first 16 teams, and several of those slots already are reserved Each team is encouraged to bring along friends and relatives who will have the chance to contribute to their team’s success. American Sewing Guild, Amador Chapter meets the 2nd Thursday from 9AM to 12 Noon and the 4th Monday from 9:30-3PM Old General Store, Drytown The local American Sewing Guild sew many items for various groups in the county. Volunteers are welcome for as much time as they wish to give. Interested in becoming a UC Master Gardener? The Master Gardener program is sponsored by the University of California. Local volunteers are specially trained to answer questions, diagnose plant problems and give horticulture assistance to the public at no cost. “Take-It-Back Amador!” Battery & Fluorescent Tube/Bulb Disposal - Meeks, Ione; ACE Hardware, Pine Grove
County residents now have more options for disposing used batteries and fluorescent tubes & bulbs “Take-It-Back Amador!” is a partnership that promotes the proper recycling and disposal of used household batteries and fluorescent tubes & bulbs.  In response to New Universal Waste Regulations, Meeks Lumber & Hardware, and ACE Hardware and Lumber stores located in Pine Grove and Ione are accepting these items, free of charge, from county residents. Universal Waste, meaning widely used, can pose a threat to public health and the environment if not properly handled.  California regulations prohibit universal wastes from landfill disposal.  Amador County residents can continue to bring these items to the County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility every other Saturday at the Buena Vista Landfill Transfer Station. Animal Disaster Preparedness Plan

Become a CASA Volunteer - The Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency is recruiting volunteers for the CASA Program. CASA volunteers, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, are specially trained community members who work directly with children moving through our court system as a result of abuse or neglect. CASA volunteers advocate for these children, helping to define their needs and providing them with attention and support. If you love working with children, have a flexible schedule, and are looking for a way to contribute to our community, please join us!
